How Black Women are Bringing Headwraps Back

For centuries black women have been bringing the heat when it comes to innovative hairstyles through accessories, different colors, and intricate patterns. We all know that black women don’t play when it comes to their hair! Which, makes perfect sense considering there was once a time when black women were not allowed to wear their hair in public. During the period of enslavement certain codes were enacted requiring black women to cover their heads with cloth. But of course, black women of the time didn’t allow these laws to stop them. The women began to adorn their heads with jewels and accessories turning their restriction into creative freedom. Afterwards, the law was overturned and black women were allowed to freely wear their hair and began to change the hair game, again. Our hair has always been a source of creative expression, theres a new style every week. Thats the beauty of black hair, its tenacity, beauty and strengh. But sometimes we all need a break, I know I do! Headwraps are just that break you desperatly need but you can still accessorize. I love that for us!

I have been seeing so many posts about headwrap styles and black headwrap businesses. Let me just say, the girls are on it! We got crotchet headwraps, silk, cotton and cloth going on. A big plus is, there is no limit to the ways you can twist and turn headwraps. There are hundreds if not thousands of ways you can style a headwrap. As we continue to don our headwraps we pay homage to our ancestors. As they turned their adversity into innovation, we continue that freedom through our creativity. Black women are bringing headwraps back through their creativity, and sharing their personal journeys of self-expression and resilience with us through social media. So show off your headwrap styles, and if you haven’t started and want to try, this is your sign! Go on Pintrest, Tik Tok or Instagram. There is inspiration everywhere, and if you dont find anything, use your imagination! It is what our ancestors did, we are the embodiment of their dreams so use that creativity and enduring spirit your ancestors gave you.
